I wish I could tell you that this Turkish style savory breakfast bowl recipe was inspired by my time spent exploring the culture and traveling all over Turkey and East Europe. But…. I haven’t been. YET! Don’t worry, it’s on my list. My bucket list. Although I’ve lived abroad and traveled to many countries (hello, that’s why I married a foreigner, okay part of the reason), there are a few ethnic foods that I (we) adore and make regularly in our house. Turkish/Mediterranean food being one of them. And believe it or not, it was spending time in New Zealand that got me hooked. Gah…. I miss that place. But I digress.

Where was I? Oh yes,  Spicy (just a wee bit) Turkish Style Breakfast Bowls.

Breakfast –> Meal of the Gods. Or so my husband claims. And this breakfast bowl is definitely fit for a God! Spicy Meat/Sausage, Eggs, tomatoes, sliced apricots, herbs, grain free herbed cassava flatbread, a dollop of goats milk yogurt with red pepper. Yes, I just said dollop. Just go with it.

Gluten Free Turkish Style Savory Breakfast Bowls.

You see, recently Sunday’s have become my stay in my pj’s till noon and cook day. As in, cook breakfast or brunch or really whatever I feel like. Haha. My husband coaches swim in the morning but is done by 10am. Brunch time. It’s probably the only day of the week that I don’t feel like I have a LIST of things to do.  This no pressure feeling is so refreshing and allows my creative juices to flow. Which is how this turkish style breakfast bowl came into play. That and our love for Mediterranean food. And maybe, just maybe, I was trying to be a good wife follow through on my husband’s request for more grain free/healthy fat based meals. Do I get an A for effort?

Okay, now this spicy turkish style breakfast bowl. It’s actually a recipe based off the traditional Turkish Breakfast recipe called Menemen, which includes eggs, goat cheese, tomato, chilies, and spices such as ground black pepper, ground red pepper, and Turkish meats/sausage. Although the meat is not part of the traditional recipe, it can be added. You’re also supposed to eat it as a main meal along with some crusty style bread and lots of olive oil and yogurt to dip. Mmmmm….I’m drooling just typing that out.

My version is obviously not the traditional recipe, but it’s definitely inspired by all those Turkish flavors and ingredients.  Wanna know the best part? It’s all made in ONE PAN (or one POT) so you can make ONE bowl of amazingness.

Think of this as Texas style quick home cooking meets Turkish style flavor deliciousness! Can you even handle that? Oh heck ya!

So here’s what you’ll need for my version. And I promise it’s like SUPER EASY!

  • One pan/skillet
  • Spicy Ground sausage or other gluten free ground meat of choice (we used 5280 Meats spicy chorizo)
  • 14 oz can of diced tomatoes
  • diced green chilies
  • garlic, smoked paprika, red pepper flakes, onion, parsley, pepper
  • dried turkish apricots
  • cream (we use coconut cream)
  • a touch of lemon juice
  • Toppings/fixing – Hard boiled egg, goats milk yogurt or cheese, bacon crumbles, flat bread.

Yep! It’ s a breakfast bowl for the Gods. Or in this case, a hearty yet healthy brunch or brinner for all!
